gentoo.osuosl.org installer is a quite simple Python program designed to aid users (especially those who are installing Gentoo for the first time) in the installation process. It is not meant to be a replacement for the Gentoo Handbook, instead, it is designed to work with it and provide a summarized amount of information to the user and if he/she needs more USE Flags. USE flags are to control optional dependencies and settings which the user may reasonably want to select. For example, app-editors/vim can optionally build with support for the ruby interpreter, and it needs dev-lang/ruby installed to do this — we use the ruby USE flag to provide this option. On the other hand, app-text/glark requires ruby no matter what, so no USE flag is used there. User Environment - Gentoo Development Guide User Environment User environment variables and make.conf settings get passed on to ebuilds. This can be useful — it's how CFLAGS and friends work, for example — but it can also result in nasty build-breaking variables like LANG and LC_ALL getting through. If you want to install Gentoo using the Internet, you need to setup networking. 3. Preparing the Disks To be able to install Gentoo, you must create the necessary partitions. This chapter describes how to partition a disk for future usage. 4. Installing the Gentoo Installation Files Gentoo installs work through socalled stage-files. The Gentoo Devmanual is a technical manual which covers topics such as writing ebuilds and eclasses, and policies that developers should be abiding by. Get Gentoo! gentoo.org sites . gentoo.org; If the m4 files aren't installed in the user's system, the autoconf step will fail. More general information on the topic can be found under packaging namespace packages in Python Packaging User Guide. Namespace packages in Python 3¶ Since all supported Python versions in Gentoo support PEP-0420 namespaces, the other two methods are technically unnecessary. Gentoo Policy Guide aims to become a definitive clear source of all Tree Policies that are currently binding to Gentoo developers. It combines both policies that are global by design (i.e. set by the QA team or the Council), as well as specific to other Gentoo projects. The policies are meant to be supplied with rationale and clear indication Since all Gentoo Documentation is a joint effort and several people will most likely change existing documentation, a coding style is needed. A coding style contains two sections. The first one is regarding internal coding — how the XML-tags are placed. The second one is regarding the content — how not to confuse the reader. We would like to show you a description here but the site won't allow us. 1. Format your installation partitions 2. Get your stage unpacked, and lead you through a general stage3 installation (possibly stage2, I always just used stage3) 3. CHROOT your enviorment 4. Install: sysklogd, xfree, icewm, grub, kernel (2.6.4), nano, gdm 5. Help configure grub for booting 6. Reboot 7. Boot into Gentoo 8. Configure X 9.
